"How Fast Are We Going?"

This is certainly one of the most frequently asked questions from newcomers aboard Rose. There's an easy and reliable way to find out, and it doesn't require any sophisticated electronic equipment (the kind that becomes worthless when the batteries fail). With only a little thought you can find the answer on your own - all you need is a watch with a second hand and an environmentally friendly chip of wood or something comparable. Because we know that the distance between the cat heads forward and the quarter bitts aft is exactly 100 feet we can simply time how long it takes our chip to pass down the ship's side and then reference the table below. Remember, knots are nautical miles per hour and one nautical mile equals 6080 feet.
