Waist

You are now standing in what's known as the waist of the ship, the area between the fore and main masts. The deck you are standing on is the upper deck, often referred to as the weather deck.

Have a look around the weather deck of Rose. Right now you are on the starboard side of the ship looking aft to the main companionway leading down to the halfdeck. You'll also see a break in the deck with two short steps leading to the quarterdeck. Please excuse us if some of our lines look amiss. Crewmembers were working aloft when we recorded this and using those gantlines to hoist tools and materials up to them.

Rose is a full-rigged ship: three masts with square sails on each one. Can you spot all three masts? With 17 sails and nearly nine miles of rigging she offers ample opportunity for the participation of all hands. As a trainee, whether you choose to work on deck or aloft, your efforts will be vital to the success of the ship's voyage.

By the way, Rose is a safe ship: she has an excellent stability rating, first class safety equipment, modern electronic navigation and communication gear and a skilled, professional crew. Her Coast Guard certificate of inspection permits her to make voyages on "all oceans" meaning she can sail anywhere in the world.

Ready for a little adventure? Then let's go aloft! We'll climb the mainmast shrouds now to get a birdseye view of the ship.
