This is the part of the lower decks known today as the "halfdeck" because it's halfway down to the main gundeck.

You can look aft into the Great Cabin. In the middle of the halfdeck is the mizzen mast. Directly below us is the aft cabin where officers berth. Forward, portside, is the companionway leading to the galley enclosure. Starboard side companionway leads to the main sweep of the gundeck.
