The Ship's Bell

Every ship carried a bell that was used for announcing the ship's position when anchored in fog or reduced visibility, and for heralding the time. The day at sea was divided into four hour blocks corresponRose today we use the bell only to signal emergency situations. Legend has it that if you ring the bell for no good reason a sailor will die at sea. It has been suggested that this may be a legend of fairly recent derivation, possibly put forth by a former Rose crew member who had heard one too many schoolchild hang upon the bell lanyard.
